How to Promote Yourself as a Tutor
Lately, one of the most popular questions new tutors have is how to promote themselves. Considering the competitiveness of the online tutoring market, I agree that self-promotion can be a challenge nowadays.
However, with the right strategies and tips, you can stand out and attract students who are a perfect fit for your teaching style.
Today, I would like to share with you the fail-proof tips that just work to help you create a strong and appealing online presence. Let’s begin with the first one:
Define Your Niche and Expertise
The first step in self-promotion is to understand what sets you apart from other tutors.
A lot of newcomer tutors try to spread their attention to many subjects to get more clients and start making money. Do not commit this mistake.
Instead of trying to teach a wide variety of them, concentrate on a niche you excel at. You may have a background in advanced math or experience preparing students for specific exams.
Or maybe you just want to help others learn your native language.
The options are endless, just pick the one you are most passionate about and tailor your marketing efforts to highlight it.
When you show your specialty in specific areas, potential students will see that you have in-depth knowledge of it. It also attracts learners who specifically look for what you offer.
Just imagine you are looking at a tutor's profile, be it on a tutoring platform or a personal website. A bit about you as a student, you work at a company and need to improve your conversational Business English.
You come across a profile of the tutor offering services in four different subjects: math, English, biology, and physics. Would you sign up to learn English with this tutor?
I wouldn’t, this profile does not offer me the trust of expertise I need.
On the other hand, you see a profile of an “English tutor” who offers conversational English for business professionals.
At once, you know the match in conversational English, and business professionals ring a bell since you can also practice Business English. This profile is more appealing than the one before.
Hence, the more specific you can be, the easier it will be for your potential students to find you. And the more expectations you meet, the longer your students will stay with you.
Build a Professional Website or Profile
In online tutoring, your online presence is everything. Here as well you have a range of options.
You can build a professional website. WordPress and Wix are easy to work with when developing your website. They are specifically designed for non-programmers to build and launch a website easily.
You can even hire a professional developer. However, it may be quite expensive if you do it from scratch rather than using a template.
Having a professional website or detailed profile on tutoring directories can greatly increase your visibility.
You can advertise them on your social networks or blogs. Now, what should your website include?
First, use high-quality professional, and friendly photos. They are visuals and always appealing. Plus, low-quality pictures will pixelate and make a website look ugly.
Also, add a short bio that highlights your qualifications, teaching experience, and specializations. Focus on a subject/s or skills you teach.
In addition, we all like to read reviews of a product we buy or a service we order. The same is true for your potential students.
They want to know what other students of yours said and are more likely to trust you when they see that others have had a positive experience with your tutoring services.
So, ask your current and previous students or their parents for testimonials to include true feedback. And display these prominently on your website, social media, and other marketing materials. They will serve as a powerful form of social proof.
If you are a new tutor, just starting, and do not have many reviews yet, consider offering discounted or free lessons in exchange for testimonials.
And finally, a clear call to action to book a session with you.
On the website, it may be a big colorful button that is easy to find.
On the profile page, at the very end, make sure to encourage your potential students to book a lesson with you now.
Fill out your profile on a tutoring platform or the website thoroughly and make sure to keep it up to date.
Leverage Social Media
Social media is an incredibly powerful tool for promoting yourself as a tutor. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and even YouTube can help you reach an audience anywhere in the world.
The most important is to provide valuable content that showcases your expertise. Some of the ideas for the content could be:
- Posting short educational videos or tutorials.
- Sharing success stories or testimonials.
- Offering tips and tricks relevant to your subject area.
- Engaging with followers by answering their questions.
Social media allows you to build relationships with your potential students. You can show millions of people what kind of a tutor you are.
By regularly sharing content, you become a trusted figure in your niche, which makes students more likely to book sessions with you.
Also, if a video creation feels overwhelming, start small by sharing some educational infographics or text-based tips that resonate with your audience.
Also, there are many faceless video tools that allow you to create videos without showing your face and even without using your voice.
Offer Free Resources
One of the best ways to showcase your teaching abilities is by offering free resources. It is also a well-known marketing trick.
It could be anything from downloadable worksheets and quizzes to a free consultation or a trial lesson.
Offering value upfront without any obligation helps your potential students get a taste of your teaching style. Also, when it comes to a trial lesson or a free consultation, many tutors are reluctant to work for free.
However, it is a very powerful tool to convince a student to become regular.
I make a shorter trial lesson or provide a free consultation on goal setting and building a learning plan.
In addition, when you offer something for free, it builds trust with your audience. Students are more likely to invest in paid lessons if they feel they’ve already gained something valuable from you.
Make sure to promote these resources on your website and social media, it will drive traffic back to your main tutoring services.
Optimize for SEO
Search engine optimization (SEO) might sound intimidating to many people, but it’s crucial if you want to get found online.
Let me explain to you how it works. When you search for something online, you typically type in specific keywords related to your needs. Hence, we can use it for our benefit.
Make keywords research related to your area and include them in your website profile or blogs.
You can use tools like Google’s Keyword Planner to find out what phrases are students searching for and include them naturally into your content.
Good SEO allows you to rank higher in search engine results and attract more students. Hence, increases your visibility to students searching for the subjects you teach.
Without a doubt, this is a long-term strategy, but once you build traction, the results can be rewarding.
Use Email Marketing to Stay Connected
Email marketing may sound outdated, but it is still one of the most effective ways to promote yourself as a tutor.
You can build a list of potential students or parents and send them regular updates.
Also, people might not be ready to book a session immediately, but if you stay in contact, they’re more likely to reach out when they are ready.
It will allow you to nurture leads over time. You can use email newsletters to:
- Share new content or resources.
- Offer special promotions or discounts.
- Announce new services or course offerings.
- Collect feedback to improve your services.
Make sure to keep your emails short. No one likes to read a long email unless obliged. Since this type of email will not fall in this category, no one will read your long email.
Also, provide value in every message and make sure to include a clear CTA that drives people to book a lesson with you.
Run Targeted Ads
Organic promotion is undoubtedly important, but it may also take time. Paid advertising will help you reach out to a larger audience quicker.
You have many options when it comes to paid ads. You can run them on platforms like Google, Facebook, or Instagram to target students based on specific criteria such as location, age, or interests.
Paid ads also allow you to get in front of the right people. Meaning to people that already searched for a tutor with your qualifications and are more prone to book a lesson. By targeting students who are actively searching for tutors, you can increase your chances of gaining new clients.
Start with a small budget to start and experiment with different ad copy and visuals. Also, track your results and adjust your strategy accordingly.
Offer Referral Discounts
One of the very effective strategies is referrals. Many businesses pay for promotion of their products. You can adjust this approach, and instead of paying your students which does not make sense, offer a referral discount. When a student refers a friend or family member to you, reward them with a discount on their next lesson.
People normally trust recommendations from friends and family.
By offering a referral incentive, you encourage your existing clients to spread the word about your services.
Also, make sure to clearly explain how the referral program works and promote it in your email newsletter or social media posts.
Host Webinars or Free Workshops
Another great way to promote yourself is by hosting webinars or workshops.
See, many course creators or private tutors conduct live sessions or record workshop videos for YouTube and other platforms.
These allow you to showcase your teaching skills and expertise in front of a live audience.
Plus, they give potential students a taste of what it is like to work with you.
Live events usually build a sense of community and provide valuable, actionable insights to participants. They also give you a chance to answer questions and engage with potential clients directly.
This strategy works very well. One of my favorite psychologists holds frequent live sessions where he answers people’s questions. During those sessions, he also promotes his school and webinars. Many students, including me, have been coming from there.
You may also offer attendees a special discount if they sign up within a certain timeframe.
Promoting yourself as a tutor may require time and effort, but with the right approach, you can build a successful tutoring business.
Define your niche, build a strong online presence, leverage social media, and use strategies like email marketing and referrals. You will attract more students and grow your reputation as an expert tutor.
