Communication skills

Effective communication

We’re here to talk about the true foundation of all great tutoring: effective communication. It’s a skill that goes far beyond simply knowing your subject. You can be an expert in math, history, or a language, but if you can't connect with your student and transfer that knowledge clearly, the learning just doesn't happen. This lesson is all about building that bridge.

We'll start by looking at what communication really is. It’s more than just an exchange of words. We’re going to explore a surprising truth about how we send and receive messages—and you might be shocked to learn that the actual words you choose are only a small piece of the puzzle. We’ll uncover the two other elements that have a much bigger impact on how your student perceives your message: your tone of voice and your body language.

From there, we’ll get into the practical side of things. We'll discuss the art of giving crystal-clear instructions and why a simple shift in how you ask a student to do something can be the difference between confusion and clarity. I’ll share my own experiences on how to use your voice not just to explain, but to encourage and build confidence, especially when a student is struggling.

Most importantly, we’ll look at one of the biggest challenges for new tutors: how to truly know if your student understands. We’ll move beyond the simple "Do you get it?" question (which almost always gets a "yes," even when it's not true!) and explore more powerful ways to check for understanding. You’ll learn how to ask questions that encourage your student to think critically, giving you a real window into their understanding.
