Scenarios of boundaries
In our last lessons, we talked about the "why" and "how" of setting boundaries. We’ve laid the foundation. Now, it’s time to move from theory to reality and see how these principles work in the real world.
Think of this lesson as a practical workshop—a safe space to test your new skills. Being a tutor isn't just about knowing your subject; it's about knowing how to handle the human moments that come up. And trust me, they will! I’ve been in this field for a long time, and I’ve seen many of them.
In this session, we're going to work through several common tutor-student scenarios. These are the tricky, sometimes awkward situations that can catch new tutors off guard and test their professional boundaries. I’ll present you with a situation, and then I’ll ask you to pause and think: What would I do here? What boundary is being tested?
We’ll explore situations like:
- The student who asks for a little too much help on a big project.
- The one whose late-night texts and last-minute cancellations start to disrupt your work-life balance.
- The student who expects you to check homework outside of your paid lesson time.
- The friendly student who begins to blur the lines between a professional relationship and a personal friendship.
This isn't a test with right or wrong answers. It's a training ground. My goal is to help you develop your professional instincts so that when you face these challenges in your own tutoring career, you can respond with confidence, kindness, and clarity. We’ll discuss each scenario together, breaking down the best course of action and why it works, not just for your peace of mind, but for the student's learning and motivation, too.
By the end of this lesson, you will understand the rules and be prepared to apply them. You'll also be more confident in navigating the complexities of the tutor-student relationship and better equipped to build a practice that is both successful and sustainable.
