Tutor Overview

Practicing as a tutor

As you move forward on your tutoring career, you’ll soon come to ask yourself a question: will you work for a school or company, or will you build your own independent practice?

There is no single right answer, but in this lesson, I want to walk you through the realities of both paths, based on my own experiences, and give you a clear and honest picture. We're going to compare what it’s like to be an employee versus an independent tutor.

First, we’ll explore the path of the independent tutor—the world of being your own boss. This path offers an incredible amount of freedom. We'll talk about what it truly means to set your own schedule, work from anywhere you choose (even a beach in Bali, if that’s your dream!), and have the power to select your own students and set your own rates.

But with total freedom comes total responsibility. We'll discuss how to structure your day to avoid burnout, why taking breaks is non-negotiable for your energy, and how to set boundaries that protect your time and well-being.

We will also touch on the creative side of independent work, such as lesson preparation that allows you to design unique, engaging lessons that a traditional curriculum would never allow.

Then, we'll look at the other side: working as an employee for a tutoring center or school. This path offers more stability and structure. It’s a different kind of trade-off, one that might be perfect for you depending on your personality and goals.

You'll have a real-world understanding of what each choice feels like, empowering you to move forward with confidence.
